The best holidays I’ve had the privilege of experiencing and enjoying so far all happens on islands. Visited a couple of islands but somehow I’ve let people’s perception of Maldives being somewhere for “honeymooners or couples” cloud my judgement of somewhere I should have explored a long time ago. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure this perception has to do with the unrivalled beauty the island exudes.
This year have been a roller coaster for me, my badassery have been tested in so many ways I couldn’t have envisioned. It’s the year I least travelled, It’s been literally work and an imbalance in my personal life. I needed this break! As a Nigerian passport holder, I need a visa to travel to many places in the world. I didn’t have the patience or courage to breakthrough any visa denial (just incase that happens) so it was indeed an opportunity to explore Maldives on my own. What was on top of my agenda was a restful holiday somewhere not far from where I reside and close to nature. Maldives it was!
I was lucky to get a good all-inclusive package in a five star Resort, I can’t be the only one that get scared at the sight of the bill after a good holiday. I booked the beach villa with the hope of getting an upgrade when I arrive and YES I GOT UPGRADED TO THE BEST ROOM THERE IS! I would imagine they thought my husband probably abandoned me at the airport so they had to be extra nice 🙂

The weather was perfect, the sky was blue, the waves crashed calmly and the water was crystal clear. I could see the fishes without even snorkelling. The resort was beautiful too with friendly staffs. I just wished they stopped asking me about my invisible husband.
SUNRISE
Nothing would ever compare to the joy of waking up to the most beautiful sunrise, I think I might have cried watching it on the first day. I took every moment in and I’m still savouring those moments as I write. No camera would ever capture such beautiful sunrise perfectly. It is a paradise indeed! I later told people on the snorkelling trip about it, some of them agreed and some looked forward to the next one. I woke up 5:30hrs everyday just to absorb this beauty, the one day it rained I was so upset but hey I don’t even mind a rainy day in paradise.
Snorkelling
Snorkelling was scheduled twice daily, one in the morning and the other in the evening. I had a bad experience couple of years ago when I tried snorkelling. I swam towards the boat and my partner then had to rescue me, this had a dent on my confidence on snorkelling alone. However, I was determined to do it this time without a plus one and I did it! Now it’s time to explore Scuba Diving. In my opinion, snorkelling in the morning is the best time to spot beautiful aquatic creatures. The first day I snorkelled in the morning, I saw Dolphins! I didn’t just spot them, they literally swam next to the boat. I was under water when I heard people screaming, raised my head and it was Dolphinssssss. My excitement was over the roof! After I got back on the boat I saw another pod of Dolphins, it was only my first day so i’m sure you can imagine the level of my excitement. Every other day followed the same trend and the water was super calm.
Sunset and Dolphin cruise
I love sunsets, capturing sunset is one of my favourite things to do when I’m on holiday. I literally get dressed and wear makeup because I’m going to watch the sunset anytime I’m holidaying on an island. The sunset in Maldives was phenomenal and unreal, just imagine watching the sunset and dolphins hopping in and out of the sea. Absolutely Beautiful! This was my favourite activity. However, I wasn’t lucky enough to see the sunset everyday as it rained a couple of times and the clouds didn’t help at all.

The SPA AND YOGA
Massage on an island with a view. I’m not sure if I relaxed properly as I kept looking down the sea through the glass the massage bed was positioned. it was the most beautiful thing ever. Everything was perfection in it’s natural state.
Yoga helped me relax and meditate, the yoga lessons were held right on the sea as well. I meditated while absorbing all the beauty the Island possessed.
Every moment of this trip was filled with gratefulness and me thanking God for my sight, the beauty my eyes have experienced on this trip can never be taken away for me. I enjoyed every bit of it alone and the fact that I ran things according to my schedule made it better. Don’t get me wrong it’s a good destination to experience with your partner but not having to plan my itinerary around another person is fantastic and satisfying!
If you are on the fence about going to Maldives solo, go for it! It’s great for alone time and enjoying nature on your own. Definitely enjoyed it and i’ll be doing it again, it can be a bit pricey though.
